Biology Homestasis Flashcards
Are endothermic organisms warm-blooded or cold-blooded?
Warm-blooded.
What are some of the physical characteristics of endotherms?
Feathers, fur, and clothing.
What are ectothermic organisms?
Cold-blooded organisms.
Do ectotherms process more energy or endotherms?
Endotherms because they convert their own energy.
Do ectotherms or endotherms need to eat less?
Ectotherms.
What does WSICTU?
Water.
Sugar.
Ions.
Carbon Dioxide and Ceullar Respiration.
Temperature.
Urea.
What does a negative feedback system do?
Bring levels back to normal or decrease them entirely.
Example: Blood pressure decreasing to normal.
What does a positive feedback system do?
Example: Childbirth
Moves the reaction or result in a certain direction.
What do feedback mechanisms in general do?
Maintain internal conditions despite a changing environment.
What is the hypothalamus typically known as when it comes to feedback systems? (HINT: Two-part answer)
The Control Center
What are some homeostasis disruptions? (HINT: The three D’s)
-Death
-Disorder
-Disease
What do ectotherms rely on to maintain their temperatures?
Their environments.
What is the stimulus?
A thing or event that creates a reaction in either organs or tissues.
What is a receptor?
Type of sensor that monitors the environment and its changes.
What is the control center?
Determines the level or set point that a variable must be maintained to analyze information by the receptor.
