Biology - Homeostasis and Response Flashcards
Define ‘Homeostasis’
The maintenance of constant internal conditions in response to external/internal changes for optimum enzyme and cell function.
Define ‘Enzyme’
A biological catalyst.
What can denature an enzyme?
pH, and temperature
Name 3 internal conditions the body must monitor
Water levels, blood-sugar levels, temperature.
Name the 3 types of neurones.
Sensory, Relay and Motor.
What 2 components make up the Nervous System?
The CNS and PNS
What is a hormone?
A chemical messenger released by organs in the body.
Name 3 hormone producers
Pituitary gland, Ovaries, Adrenal glands
True or False: The brain is involved in the reflex arc
False.
True or False: The spinal cord is involved in the reflex arc
True.
How does the body cool itself down when temperatures rise too high?
The body cools itself down by releasing sweat from sweat glands.
What hormone stimulate the ‘fight or flight’ response?
Adrenaline
Which hormone is released from the pancreas?
Glucagon.
What is glycogen?
A polysaccharide of glucose
What is negative feedback?
The body’s response to optimising internal conditions after a change is detected.
