biology- homeostasis Flashcards
WHAT IS HOMEOSTASIS?
- the regulation of internal body conditions to maintain optimum standards for functioning
NAME 3 EXAMPLES OF WHAT HOMEOSTASIS CONTROLS IN THE BODY
-blood sugar levels
-water levels
body temperature
WHAT ARE THE TWO SYSTEMS IN THE BODY?
-the endocrine system
-the nervous system
NAME 4 GLANDS IN THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
-adrenal gland
-ovaries
-testes
-pancreas
-pituitary gland
WHAT IS NEGATIVE FEEDBACK?
- a regulatory process in the body whereby changes in the body can be reversed once they have happened.
WHAT IS THE MASTER GLAND AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
-the pituitary gland secretes hormones, which will have a direct or indirect effect
WHAT IS DIRECT AND INDIRECT HORMONE RELEASE
-direct will target the organ straight away
indirect causes other glands to release hormones (estrogen and testosterone)
WHAT IS TYPE ONE DIABETES?
-inherited
-the pancreas doesn’t produce enough or any insulin
-treated by taking insulin shots everyday
WHAT IS TYPE TWO DIABETES?
-the cells become resistant to insulin
-often associated with obesity and seen in older people
HOW LONG IS THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE?
-28 days
WHAT 4 HORMONES ARE INVOLVED IN THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE?
-FSH
-LH
-Oestrogen
-Progesterone
WHAT DOES FSH DO?
-causes the egg to mature in the ovary
WHAT DOES LH DO?
-stimulates the release of an egg
WHAT DOES OESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE DO?
-maintains the uterus lining
