Biology Flashcards
Ecology
the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings.
Atmosphere
a dynamic collection of gases that constantly move and change.
Lithosphere
The solid, outer part of Earth.
Hydrosphere
The total amount of water on a planet.
Biosphere
a global ecosystem made up of living organisms (biotic) and the nonliving (abiotic) factors that provide them with energy and nutrients.
photosynthesis
the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.
cellular respiration
the process by which organisms use oxygen to break down food molecules to get chemical energy for cell functions.
ecosystem
a community or group of living organisms that live in and interact with each other in a specific environment.
community
a group of species that are commonly found together
population
a group of individuals of the same species living and interbreeding within a given area.
species
a group of organisms that can reproduce naturally with one another and create fertile offspring.
biotic factors
a living organism that shapes its environment. Example: Fish in the sea
abiotic factors
a non-living part of an ecosystem that shapes its environment. Example: temperature
ecological niche
a term for the position of a species within an ecosystem, describing both the range of conditions necessary for persistence of the species, and its ecological role in the ecosystem.
food web
consists of all the food chains in a single ecosystem
