Biology Final Vocab and Terms Flashcards
monosaccharides
simple sugar molecule
lipids
macromolecule made mostly from carbon and hydrogen atoms
nucleic acids
macromolecules containing hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus
prokaryotes
unicellular organism that lacks a nucleus
eukaryotes
organism whose cells contain a nucleus
nucleotide
subunit of which nucleic acids are composed; made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base
law of independent assortment
genes for different traits can segregate independently during the formation of gametes
covalent bond
the type of bond between atoms in which the electrons are shared
ionic bond
a chemical bond formed when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
hydrogen bond
a weak attraction between a hydrogen atom and another atom
pH scale
scale with values 0-14 used to measure the concentration of H+ ions in a solution; pH 0-7 is acidic; pH 7-14 is basic
autotrophs
organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce it’s own food from inorganic compounds
heterotroph
organism that obtains food by consuming other living things
binary fission
a type of asexual reproduction in which an organism replicates it’s DNA and divides in half, producing two identical daughter cells
