Biology Evolution Test Flashcards
Evolution
the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth.
Artificial Selection (Selective breeding)
Selective breeding, also known as artificial selection, is a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable characteristics.
Adaptation:
the action or process of adapting or being adapted:
Fitness:
the capacity of an organism to survive and transmit its genotype to reproductive offspring as compared to competing organisms
Natural Selection:
a natural process that results in the survival and reproductive success of individuals or groups best adjusted to their environment and that leads to the perpetuation of genetic qualities best suited to that particular environment
Selective Pressure
Selective pressures are environmental factors or influences which may lessen reproduction in a species’ population and therefore contributes to evolutionary change or even extinction through natural selection.
Reproduction
the production of offspring by a sexual or asexual process.
Variation
divergence in one or more characteristics of an organism or biotype from those typical of or usual for its group.
Biogeography:
the branch of biology that deals with the geographical distribution of plants and animals.
Homologous Structure:
A homologous structure is a similar structure that can be found in very different animals, often pointing towards a common ancestor.
Analogous Structure:
a structure that compared with another has the same function but a different origin
Vestigial Structure:
various cells, tissues, and organs in a body which no longer serve a function.
