Biology: Evolution Flashcards
What is variation?
The difference between individuals from the same species
What is genetic variation
Variation that comes from your genes which are sections of your dna
What is environmental variation?
Variation that is influenced by the environment (e.g. how much food you have, sunlight exposure, lifestyle choice etc.)
What is adaptation?
Changes that occur after a long period of time which give them an advantage in their environments
What are structural adaptations?
Structural adaptations are physical features which allow them to compete.
What are physiological adaptations?
Physiological adaptations are processes which allow them to compete. Things that the organism does without its conscience necessarily telling it to so it does it naturally
What are behavioural adaptations?
Behavioural adaptations are behaviours which give them an advantage. They’re usually born with the ability or the drive to do these things
Intercompetition
Different species fight for survival
Intracompetition
Members of the same species fight for survival (tends to be more intense)
What is natural selection?
When variation means animals outcompete eachother meaning the are better suited to their environment and most likely to survive and reproduce
What does VOSR stand for?
Variation, Outcompete, Survival, Reproduction
What is a fossil?
The preserved remains or imprint in a rock of a plant or animal. These organisms would have lived thousands of years ago or more as fossils take a long time to form.
