BIOLOGY- Energy Flashcards
What are the different types of energy?
Thermal, electrical, Gravitational potential, Light, chemical, kinetic, sound, elastic, nuculear
What is the original source of most energy resources?
The sun
Give examples of sun originated energy
oil, coal, biomass and wind
Give examples of fossil fuels
oil, coal, gas
What is renewable?
can be used again
What is non-renewable?
cannot be reused as they take a long time to form
What is the process in which electricity is made?
They begin with the cooling towers and then they go through the boiler, turbine, generator, national grid and finally to the source of electricity.
What is the energy types that electricity goes through when it is made?
chemical-thermal-kinetic-electrical
Why is burning fossil fuels bad for the environment?
It increases global warming because of CO2 and because it it is non-renewable.
What is the greenhouse effect?
When we are trapping too much heat because of global-warming
What are the gases involved in the greenhouse effect which make it worse?
CO2 and CH4 (carbon dioxide and methane)
What are the gases that cause acid rain?
SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NO2 (Nitrogen dioxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide)
How is acid rain caused?
Because gases mix with water in the clouds which makes a weak form of acid rain.
How could acid rain kill small organisms in water?
Changes PH so they die.
