Biology: Digestive System Flashcards
What is the passage of food?
mouth tongue pharynx oesophagus stomach small intestine = duodenum and ileum large intestine= colon and rectum
What is another term for carbohydrates?
polysaccharides
What are polysaccharides digested to by amylase?
to dissacharides (maltose) and monosaccharides (glucose)
What digests proteins?
digested with pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin in the stomach
to polypeptides and amino acids
What digests fats ?
digested with bile salts (emulsify/solubilize) and pancreatic amylase, trypsin and lipase
to fatty acids and glycerol
Where does most absorption of nutrients occur?
small intestine via the blood capillaries of villi (large SA)
What is the optimum pH ofr enzymes in stomach?
2
What is the optimum pH of enzymes in the mouth and small intestine?
7 and at body temperature
e.g. salivary amylase stops working in the stomach
What temperature denatures enzymes?
above 45 degrees
What protects the digestive tract from digestive enzymes?
lubricated with mucus
What does the large intestine do ?
it absorbs water and indigestive material is eliminated
