Biology chapter 19.4 Flashcards
Mimicry
An act that resembles other organisms/inanimate objects to gain an advantage in their surroundings
Competitive Exclusion Principle
two species can’t coexist for long without one becoming extinct
Symbiosis
A close prolonged association between 2 or more different biological species.
Mutualism
two species benefiting each other
Commensalism
two species where only one benefits without harming the other
Parasitism
two species where one benefits from harming the other
Biodiversity
the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world
Species Richness
The number of species within a defined region
Relative Abundance
how common or rare a species is relative to other species in a given location or community
Species Evenness
a description of the distribution of abundance across the species in a community
Foundation species
species that have a strong role in structuring a community
Keystone species
an organism that helps define an entire ecosystem
Environmental Disturbance
an event or force, of nonbiological or biological origin, that brings about mortality to organisms and changes in their spatial patterning in the ecosystems they inhabit
Secondary Succession
the ecological succession that occurs after the initial succession has been disrupted and some plants and animals still exist.
Primary Succession
when a new area of land is populated by a group of species for the first time
Pioneer Species
the first Species to settle down in an area
Climax Community
An ecological community in which populations of plants or animals remain stable and exist in balance with each other and their environment
Equilibrium
the state in which all forces acting on the body are balanced with an equal and opposite force
Resistance
the capacity of bacteria to withstand the effects of a harmful chemical agent
Resilience
the ability to experience novel stimuli (some positive and some negative) without a fear response
Food Chain
a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another
Food Web
a complex network of interconnecting and overlapping food chains showing feeding relationships within a community
Trophic level
the position of an organism in the food chain
Producer
organisms that make their own food
