Biology CH8 Flashcards
Photons
Tiny particles of light
Photosynthesis
The process of converting sunlight into usable, chemical energy
Carbon
Carbon is the besis for all living material.
Nitrogen
Most of earths atmosphere is made out of nitrogen about 79%.
It is also intrumental in building proteins and nucleic acids both of witch make up your DNA.
Phosphorous
Its a vital nutrient to plants and animals because its a key component to NDA.
Asential to cell division and growth.
autotrophs
self-feeders
Heterotrophs
other-feeders
ATP
Assential molecule
Lesson 2
Homeostasis
The ability to maintain stable, constant internal conditions.
HOMEO - Same
Stasis - Standing
Eukaryotic cells
cells that contain a nucleus and organelles structure
Diffusion
The tendancy for particles to spread out evenly in an available space
Passive Transport
The cell doesn’t have to do any work to make the molecular movement happen
Facilitated Diffusion
Diffuse across the membrane through the transport proteins
Active Transport
A cell uses energy to move molecules across a membrane.
Exocytosis
Exports meterial out of the cell.
Endocytosis
Imports material into the cell.
Endotherms
Generate heat through their own metabolism.
Lesson 3
Feedback mechanisms
Responses that trigger other activities or processes
Negative Feedback
Attempt to maintain a target level
Positive Feedback
Amplifications away from a targer level
Ectotherms
Rely on outside sources to regulate their body temperature
Endotherm
Regulate your own internal body temperature through metabolism
Hypothalamus
Your hypothalamus, a structure deep in your brain, acts as your body’s smart control coordinating center. Its main function is to keep your body in a stable state called homeostasis. It does its job by directly influencing your autonomic nervous system or by managing hormones.
Alteration
The feedback mechanism has an error
Type I Diabetes
The beta cells don’t produce insulin that lowers the blood glucose levels
Type II Diabetes
The body stops recognizing the insulin
