Biology- Ch 1 Flashcards
What do biologists study?
Bacteria to very large organisms
How much to exercise
How to avoid getting sick
Air, land and food supply
What are the 7 characteristics of life?
Organization, presence of one or more cells, response to stimulus, homeostasis, metabolism, growth and development, reproduction, and change thought time
What is a cell?
The smallest unit that can perform all life’s processes.
What does unicellular mean?
Any living thing made up of one cell
What does multicellular mean?
Any living thing made up of multiple cells
What is an autotrophs?
Anything that obtains energy from sunlight
What is a heterotroph?
Obtain energy by consuming organisms
What are organ systems
Groups of specialized parts that carry out a certain function in the organ
Organ?
Structures that carry out specialized jobs
Tissues?
Groups of cells that have similar abilities and that allow the organ to function
Organelles?
Tiny structures that carry out functions necessary for the cell to stay alive.
Biological molecule?
Chemical compounds that provide physical structure and bring about movement, energy use and other cellular functions.
Atom?
Smallest particle of an element that retains all the properties of a certain element
What does response to stimulus mean?
A physical or chemical change in internal or external environment–response
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a stable level of internal conditions even though environmental conditions are changing
