Green plants and algae remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for photosynthesis . They use carbon dioxide to made proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. These make up of biomass for plants and algae. The carbon Is then passed through food chain to animals.

Animals respire all the time and use oxygen to break down glucose and produce co2 as a waste product. This is how carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere.When these animals die , there bodies are broken down by decomposes eg bacteria that feeds on dead bodies. All the carbon is released back into atmosphere as decomposes respire.
