Biology Breathing and Respiration Flashcards
3 main gases that are taken in and removed from body
oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide
what is gas exchange
swapping of gases
absorb oxygen into blood and removing carbon dioxide
diffusion meaning
movement of particles or gas moving from a higher to lower concentration
what does diffusion do to oxygen and alveoli
diffusion moves oxygen out of the alevoli and into the blood
what is respiration
chemical process which occurs in all of your cells
whats gas exchange
process involving swapping of gases that occurs at exchange surfaces
gas exchange function
allows oxygen to travel into your cells for respiration whilst removing carbon dioxide as it is a waste substance
what is alveoli
tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas is exchanged during breathing
how are alveoli adapted for gas exchange
large surface area - more diffusion of oxygen into blood from alveoli and more carbon dioxide out of the blood into the alveoli
ONE CELL THICK - diffusion distance is smaller
LOTS OF BLOOD CAPILLARIES - good blood supply
