Biology: Biological Molecules (B3) Flashcards
What is Metabolism?
A series of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms to maintain life.
What are Metabolic reactions?
The chemical reactions in the body’s cells that change food into energy.
What is a Solvent?
A liquid in which substances or solutes are dissolved, forming a solution.
What is a Disaccharide?
A type of substance that is composed of two simple sugar molecules.
What is Sucrose?
A complex molecule consisting of two monosaccharides
What is Maltose?
A reducing disaccharide formed when two glucose monomers join together.
What is a Polysaccharide?
A carbohydrate formed by long chains of repeating units, linked together by glycosidic bonds.
What is Cellulose?
A molecule consisting of hundreds or thousands of carbon and oxygen atoms.
What is Starch?
A type of carbohydrate, made up of a large number of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
What is Glycogen?
A glucose polysaccharide known to be in most mammalian and non mammalian cells, microorganisms and some plants.
What are Reducing sugars?
Any sugar that is capable of acting as a reducing agent.
What are Lipids?
An organic compound which is insoluble in water.
What are Amino Acids?
Small molecules acting as the building blocks for proteins.
What is the Biuret test?
A chemical test that detects any compound containing two or more peptide bonds.
