What is health?
Complete physical and mental health. NOT THE ABSENCE OF DISEASE.
Communicable disease
A disease that can be spread between people.
Non-Communicable disease
A disease that doesn’t spread between people and is due to bacteria or virus
Risk factor
Something that increases the chance of a harmful outcome
Type 1 diabetes
Due to genes, body doesn’t produce insulin
Type 2 diabetes
Due to an unhealthy lifestyle, body doesn’t recognise insulin being produced
How is cancer formed?
Cancerous tumors are when cells divide out of control
Benign tumor
A benign tumor is a cancer tumor which can’y spread across tissues and can’t invade organs
Malignant tumor
A tumor which spreads across through tissues and invades organs
Metastatis
When cells move away from the original cancer site, through the blood stream and the cancer spreads to other organs/bones where they continue to grow
What are the 3 harmful substances in cigarettes?
- Nicotine
- Carbon monoxide
- Tar
What is the definition of a drug?
Something that changes a chemical process in the body
What negative impacts does smoking have on the body?
Increases heart rate, high blood pressure, causes cancers, blood clots, brain disease, heart disease, lung disease
What are the main factors that make carbon monoxide so dangerous?
Odourless, colourless and poisonous. Binds to the red blood cells.
