Biology B3 Flashcards
What is the job of the nucleus
Carry genetic information
Name 4 parts of the cell
- Nucleus
- chromosomes
- cell membrane
- cytoplasm
What is the job of the cell
Membrane
To control the movements of substances that come in and out of the cell
What is occuring in the cytoplasm
Many chemical reactions
What is DNA
It’s a molecule found tightly coiled inside the nucleus
What is a molecule
A group of atoms that have bonded together
Where and why are ribosomes used?
They are used in the cell when protiens are made
What does DNA do
It forms structures called chromosomes. A section of these chromosomes is called a gene
What is occuring in mitochondria?
Cell respiration
What occurs during respiration
Energy is released from glucose in the presence of oxygen
What could you not do if you didn’t have DNA
You could not make proteins needed for growth and repair
Which initials of the four bases of DNA go together?
A - T
C - G
What does each three bases of DNA code for?
An amino acid
What does the DNA code need to do in order to make protiens?
Copy
When the DNA code has been copied, what is that copied code called?
mRNA
Why do cells like liver and muscles have a higher number of mitochondria than others?
Because mitochondria gives out large sums of energy which is what these particular muscles need to have in order to work
What are chomosomes?
Long coiled molecules of DNA which are divided up into genes
What is the name of the structure given to DNA?
A double helix
What does the double helix have?
Cross links made of chemicals called bases
How many bases does DNA have
4
What does a cross link have
Two bases known as base pairs
