Biology B1 Natural selection and species Flashcards
What does a nucleus contain that carry genes?
Chromosomes
What do genes do?
Control the characteristics of the body
Why are individuals in a species different from each other?
They have inherited different genes
AND/OR They live in different conditions
What are the two forms of reproduction?
Sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction
Why is sexual reproduction important?
It leads to variety in the offspring
Why is asexual reproduction important in plants?
New plants that are genetically identical to the original one can be cloned
What are the three modern cloning methods?
Tissue culture (in plants)
Embryo transplants
Adult cell cloning
What is done in genetic engineering?
genes are cut off and then transferred to cells of other organisms
How are chromosomes cut off?
By enzymes
What characteristics do GM crops usually have?
Resistant to insect attack or to herbicides (like mosquito spray that damages them)
What is the obvious advantage of GM crops?
Increased yield
What are the two concerns on GM crops?
Effect on wild flowers and insects
AND uncertainty about the effects of eating GM crops on human health
What two things did Darwin’s theory say?
All species have evolved from simple life forms
AND Those life forms developed more than 3 billion years ago
Why did people not believe in Darwin?
List three reasons
The theory challenged God AND Insufficient evidence AND Mechanism of inheritance and variation was not known
Who made another theory that is wrong?
Lamarck
