Biology Flashcards
Define homeostasis
The tendency to resist change in order to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment.
-involves negative feedback loops that counteract changes of various properties from target values
How does a negative feedback loop work?
Stimulus –> sensor –> control center –> effector
What does insulin do?
Decreases the concentration of glucose in the blood, secreted from B cells in pancreas
What does glucagon do?
Increases the concentration of glucose in the blood, released by alpha cells
causes glycogen to be broken down into glucose
What are the four types of basic tissues?
- epithelial
- connective
- muscle
- nervous
What is epithelial tissue?
- cover surfaces and line body cavities (skin, GI tract organs)
- polarized
Main function of integumentary system?
Provides protection from injury and fluid loss and provides physical defense against infection by microorganisms; involved in temperature control
skin
Out of arteries, arterioles, venules and veins, which has the lowest blood pressure?
Veins
