Biology Flashcards
Classification
Is the grouping of objects or organisms based on a sett of criteria
Taxonomy
is a disciple of biology primarily concerned with identifying , naming, and classifying species based on natural relationships
Binomial Nomenclature
Gives each species a scientific name that has two parts
Taxon
A named group of organisms
Genus
is defined as a group of species that are closely related and share a common ancestor
Family
is the next higher taxon, consisting of similar related genera
Order
Contains related families
Class
Contains related Orders
Phylum or Division
Contains related classes
Kingdom
Contains related Phylum or Divison
Domain
Is the broadest of all the taxa and contains one or more kingdoms
Phylogeny
Is the evolutionary history of a species
Character
To classify a species, scientists often construct patterns of descent, or phylogeny
Molecular clock
The average rate at which a species used to measure their evolutionary divergence and in other calculations
Cladistics
A way to classify animal and plants on what they have in common
