Biology Flashcards
What can bacteria cause?
Sore throats, cholera and food poisoning
What can viruses cause?
Flu and chicken pox
What can fungi cause?
Skin diseases - athletes foot and ringworm
What can fungi be used for
Baking and brewing
Type of fungi
Yeast
What can you use bacteria for
Cheese and yoghurt
What main features does a fungus cell have
Cell membrane, cell wall and nucleus
What main features does a bacteria cell have
Cell membrane and cell wall but no nucleus
What main features does a virus cell have
It has no cell membrane, wall or nucleus
How do bacteria reproduce
Growing and Splitting into two, repeatedly
How do viruses reproduce
Go into host cell and reproduce by budding
How do fungi reproduce
The spore is released and is carried by the wind. It then attaches itself to something to grow
What do fungi need to reproduce
Food, time, moisture and temperature
Ways to stop spreading diseases?
Wash your hands Cover mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing Quarantine if serious Antibacterial wipes to clean surfaces Vaccinations
What is the flu
Influenza is a virus that infects the respiratory system
What’s a vaccine
A weakened form of the disease being put into the body so the body will make antibodies to fight against this disease. If the person gets the disease they will have the right antibodies to fight it off
Where do you need bacteria
In your stomach/gut
What do bacteria need to reproduce
Temperature, food, moisture and time
What is fermentation
Fermentation is when micro-organisms produce energy for their growth and reproduction. If no oxygen is present alcohol and carbon dioxide are produced
How many cells are in yeast
One
What type of microbe is yeast
Fungus
What is yeast used for
Bread and beer
How do yeast cells reproduce
Budding
What is budding
Budding is when a fungus grows a bud on its side and then splits its nucleus in halve. One have goes into the bud and produces another
