Biology Flashcards
Tissue vs Organ
Tissue - similar cells, particular function.
Organ - different tissues, particular function.
Protozoans = ?
Single called organisms
Where is amylase / protease / lipase produced?
Amylase - pancreas, small intestine.
Protease - stomach, pancreas, small intestine.
Lipase - pancreas, small intestine.
Bile does what? Stored where?
Neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats. Gall bladder.
Order of nervous response = ?
(stimulus) –> sensory –> relay –> CNS –> motor –> effector
Describe the different neurone structures.
Sensory - long dendrite, short axon.
Relay - many short dendrites and axons.
Motor - many short sentries, long axon.
What monitors temperature?
Hypothalamus - hairs flatten + sweat.
Blood sugar too high = ?
Insulin –> glucose removed as glycogen in liver + muscles.
Kidney…
Removal of urea / ion + water adjustment.
Ultrafiltration –> Reabsorption –> Waste Released. Nephrons.
Excess amino acids –> carb + fat.
Where is ADH produced?
Pituitary Gland. Alcohol decreases ADH / ecstasy increases.
Describe the Nitrogen Cycle.
- N Fixation - lightning (N + O) or bacteria.
- Decomposition - decomposers turn proteins / urea into ammonium compounds.
- Nitrification - nitrifying bacteria change ammonium compounds into nitrites then nitrates.
- Denitrification - denitrifying bacteria turn nitrates into N gas (they respire the nitrates in anaerobic conditions).
