Animal Life
Ecology
Scientific study of all the interrelationships between organisms and their environment.
Biotic Factor
Any living factor in an organism’s environment.
Abiotic Factor
Any nonliving factor in an organism’s environment, such as soil, water temperature, and light availability.
Biosphere
Relatively thin layer of Earth and it’s atmosphere that supports life.
Biome
A large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similar types of communities.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species that occupy the same geographic place at the same time.
Community
A group of interacting populations that live in the same geographic area at the same time.
Ecosystem
A biological community and all the nonliving factors that affect it.
Habitat
A physical area in which an organism lives.
Niche
A role, or position, of an organism in it’s environments.
Predation
An act of one organism feeding on another organism.
Symbiosis
Close mutualistic, parasitic, or commensal association between two or more species that live together.
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit.
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other organism is neither helped nor harmed.
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship in which in which one organism benefits at the expense of another organism.
Reproduction
The production of offspring
Species
A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Stimulus
Any change in an organism’s internal or external environment that causes the organism to react.
Response
An organism’s reaction to a stimulus.
Homeostasis
The regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain conditions needed for life.
Adaptation
Inherited characteristic of a species that develops over time in response to an environmental factor, enabling the species to survive.
