Biology Flashcards
Nitrification
-Ammonia converted into nitrates
-carried out by nitrifying bacteria
-nitrifying bacteria needs oxygen as they are aerobic
-this process is quickened with presence of oxygen and high temperatures
Decomposition
-bacteria and fungi break down protein found in dead plants and animals, urine and faeces into ammonia
Nitrogen fixation
-Nitrogen gas converted into nitrates
-Carried out by nitrogen fixing bacteria
-these bacteria’s need oxygen as they are aerobic
-process quickened by oxygen and high temperatures
-nitrogen fixing bacteria can be found free in soil and in root nodules
-These bacteria’s gain carbohydrates from plant and in return plant gains nitrates
Denitrification
-Nitrates are converted into nitrogen gas
-carried out by denitrifying bacteria
-denitrifying bacteria don’t need oxygen as they are anerobic and thrive in waterlogged soils
