Biology Flashcards
What are the main components of a cell?
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Mitochondria
Name three structures that plant cells have that animal cells don’t.
- Cell wall
- Large vacuole
- Chloroplasts
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and energy in the form of sugar.
Write the equation for photosynthesis.
Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ light energy) → Glucose + Oxygen
What are the three main types of cell transport?
- Diffusion: Movement from high to low concentration
- Osmosis: Diffusion of water through a partially permeable membrane
- Active transport: Movement against concentration gradient (requires energy)
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular respiration is the process by which cells break down glucose to release energy.
Write the equation for cellular respiration.
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide+ Water+ Energy (ATP)
What is the function of mitochondria?
Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell and produce energy through cellular respiration.
