Biology Flashcards
Producer
A green plant able to produce food by photosynthesis
Prey
An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food
Predator
An animal that kills other organisms for food
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Population
All organisms of one species in an area
Herbivore
Only eats plants
Carnivore
Only eats other animals
Omnivore
Eats both plants and animals
Ecosystem
The interaction of the community with the living and non-living things in their habitat
Species
A group of organisms with simular characteristics that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Community
A group or organisms of different species living in the same place
Food web
A diagram showing how all the organisms in a community are linked together
Food chain
A diagram that shows the feeding relationship from the producer to the final consumer
Biomes
Areas of our planet with simular climate, landscapes, animals and plants
Biodiversity
Describes the richness of species on an ecosystem (greater variety of species = greater biodiversity)
Niche
The role the organism plays within the ecosystem
Interspecific competition
Competition between different species
Intraspecific competition
Competition between the same species
Energy loss
Heat, movement, waste (90% is lost)
Pyramid diagram
-is shape of pyramid
-1st section = producer
-2nd = primary consumer
-3rd = secondary consumer
-4th = tertiary consumer
Pyramid (trees)
Only exption to the pyramid diagram is when the tree is the bottom one as it’s bigger it’s smaller than the rest (shape of tree)
Pyramid of biomass
Show the mass of each organisms (a population) in each level (blocky pyramid)
