Biology Flashcards
What is Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)?
Is a double strand molecule that occurs bound to proteins (histones) in chromosomes in the nucleus
What are charateristic or features in R-related species?
- unstable environment
- high fecundity
- small sample size
- dispersed offspring
- early maturity
- short generation time
What are the charateristic or features in K-selected species?
- stable environment
- long life expectancy
- large body size
- high parental care
What is meiosis?
Cell division that produces gametes
What are gametes?
they are sex cells that are haploid cells
What is Haploid cells?
“Half” of the genes/chromosomes
What are Diploid cells?
Parent cell –> through meiosis
–> Haploid Gametes
What are the phases in Meiosis 1 (M1)?
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What are the phases in Meiosis 2 (M2)?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What is interphase (M1)?
Identical copies of chromosomes/ DNA formed
What is Prophase (M1)?
Centrosomes move to opposite poles of cell –> nuclei membrane breaks down
What is Metaphase (M1)?
Homologous chromosomes meet in the middle
What is Anaphase (M1)?
Homologous chromosomes are pulled apart by spindle fibres
What is Telophase (M1)?
Two new nuclei form
What is Prophase (M2)?
Centrosomes move to opposite poles and the nuclei membrane breaks down
