Biology Flashcards
Cell
All living things are made of cells. A cell is the basic unit of life
Organelle
Small cell part that maintains life processes of the cell.
Diffusion
Process for moving substances across a cell membrane
Concentration
Amount of a substance that has been dissolved in solution
Mitosis
Nuclear division
Prophase
First phase of mitosis, when the chromatin condenses to form chromosomes, and the centrioles separate and move to opposite sides of the nucleus.
Anaphase
Third phase of mitosis; phase in which the sister chromatids separate into individual chromosomes and move to opposite poles.
Differentiation
Process in which stem cells become specialized so that they can perform different functions
Meristematic cells
Stem cells that are found in plants and can become specialized
Tissue
Group of cells that function together to perform a specialized task.
Red Blood Cells
Blood cell that contains hemoglobin, a protein that can be absorbed and release oxygen.
Meristematic Tissue
Plant tissue formed from groups of meristematic cells
Mersophyll
Specialized ground tissue in which photosynthesis and gas exchange occurs.
Organ
Organized group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function
Capillaries
Thin-walled blood vessel
