Biology 1.6 Flashcards
Define sexual reproduction
The process of producing an offspring (from two parents)
State the biological terms for male and female gametes
Sperm and ova
Where is sperm formed? Ova?
Sperm is formed in the testes. Ova is formed in the ovaries.
When the male and female gamete combine, what does it become?
A zygote.
Get pictures of male and female reproductive anatomy. What is what?
Answer based on how good you did on diagram.
Function of testes.
Make sperm and testosterone
Function of prostate gland.
Produces the fluid that helps nourish and transport sperm.
Function of urethra
Urethra helps the urine get to the bladder to exit the body
Function of ovaries
Ovaries create the ova
Function of oviduct/fallopian tubes
Help transport the ova from the ovary to the uterus.
Function of uterus
The uterus nourishes the fertilized egg before birth.
Where does fertilization occur?
Fertilization occurs in a fallopian tube
Get a diagram and label sperm and egg cells
Answer based on how good you did
Acrosome reaction
The reaction of the edge of an egg cell accepting the sperm head
Fusion of egg and sperm membranes
The two gametes fuse to create a zygote
Cortical reaction
The process that makes polyspermy impossible
Purpose of menstrual cycle (refer to ova and the uterine lining)
The menstrual cycle helps pregnancy happen by having the uterine lining thicken to help the fertilized egg mature until it becomes a baby
Estrogen purpose/progesterone purpose
Estrogen repairs the uterine lining and develops female characteristics. Progesterone keeps the lining of the uterus ready for implantation and pregnancy.
Follicle/corpus luteum functions
The follicle helps prepare the ova to burst and create ovulation and produces estrogen. The corpus luteum produces progesterone and helps the zygote if implantation has occurred.
State the functions of follicle stimulating hormone and luteinising hormone
The FSH stimulates development of the Graafian follicle in ovary and the LH stimulates the release of nature ovum from the ovary and development of corpus luteum from the remains of the follicle.
