Biology Flashcards
Root systems
The system of a plant from the ground downwards to its roots
Dermal tissue system
Tissues covering the outside of the plant
Vascular tissue system
Tissues responsible for transporting substances around the plant
Ground tissue system
All other plant tissues
Male plant name?
Anther (pollen grains)
Female plant name?
Pistil (pollen grains)
Xylem
The plant tissue, similar to blood, transports water and nutrients around the plant
Photosynthesis word chart
Carbon dioxide + water -》glucose + oxygen
Stomata
Small hole that can open and close to allow games through and prevents excess loss of water through transpiration
Embryonic stem cells
Can differentiate into any type of cell, found in the embryo
Muscle tissue description
Bundles of long cells called muscle fires that contain special proteins capeable of contracting
Epithelial tissue description
Thin sheets of lightly packed cells covering the external and internal body surfaces
Epithelial tissue function
Protection from dehydration and prevents organs rubbing
Mitosis
The process of cell division through 4 major stages
Digestive tract
Long tube with an opening at each end
Mechanical digestion
Teeth and tongue breakdown food into smaller pieces
Liver function
Makes digestive chemicals and bile, breaks down fat
Gall bladder
Stores chemicals and bile the liver makes
Pancreas
Produces digestive chemicals and insulin
Platelet
Help clot blood, seal wounds and stop bleeding
Plasma
Carries blood cells, dissolved wastes, nutrients, and hormones
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessel with thin walls, can only let 1 blood cell go at a time
Nasal cavity
Entry way for air
Bronchi
Tubes that carry air to the lungs
