biology Flashcards
Tropical Rainforest
Greatest amount of biodiversity, greatest amount of rainfall. found near the equator.
Temperate rainforest
away from the equator, in places that have high amounts of ocenaic moisture, excessive rainfall
Temperate deciduous forest
experiences seaosnal changes, trees drop leaves etc
Taiga
largest terrestrial biome, trees have needles all year long, second largest holder of carbon
savanna
tropical grassland, rainfall happens within a few months, only enough to support grass,
temperate grassland
also know as praries, enough to support grass.
chaparral
shrublan wit dry summers, found around the mediterranean and southwestern unitede states.
desert
driest biome, shallow root plants.
tundra
coldest terrestrial biome, most of the ground is permanetly frozen.
lakes and pond
freshwater, lakes need a source of water like a river to keep them oxygenated,
marshes and swamps
shallow standing water, marshes dry up part of the year, critical habitats for animals, helps purify water
rivers
often start in high elevation such as mountains, start moving fast and straight then slow down and wind.
Estuaries
where rivers meet the ocean
coral reefs
only found in tropical latitudes. ocean equivalent to rainforests. highest amount of biodiverity in the ocean
open oceans
ocean equivalent to deserts, most of the life is found near the surface. the deep ocean is reliant on sunlight for energy from organismas sinking.
interfidal zone
where there is high tide and low tide, constanly changing bimome
Frozen sea ice
includes southern ocean surrounding antartica and the artic ocean near the north pole. critical habitat for polar bears narwal and walrus.
