…warmth and energy.
…growth, cell repair and cell replacement.
…smooth bowel movement.
…keeping the skin, bones and blood healthy.
What is your metabolic rate?
The speed at which the reactions in the body take place.
Why is it important to eat carbs as part of a balanced diet?
They are a good source of energy.
Name a health problem that eating too much can cause.
High blood pressure.
Give three possible effects of eating too little.
(Any of these) slow growth in child, fatigue, poor resistance to infections or irregular periods in women
Does exercising regularly increase or decrease your metabolic rate?
Increase
Why is having a high blood cholesterol level a health risk?
High risk of heart disease.
Define malnourished.
Having an unbalanced diet.
Explain why taking regular exercise decreases your risk of becoming obese.
Increases metabolic rate, decreases stored fat. Builds muscle. More energy used, less fat stored, less likely to become obese.
What is a pathogen?
A microbe that enters the body and causes diseases.
Explain how viruses replicate within your body.
By invading your cells, uses cell machinery to produce copies, then causes cell to break open, releasing new virus.
What is an antigen?
Unique molecules on the surface of cells/ pathogens/ microbes.
What are antibiotics designed to do?
To kill pathogens without harming body cells.
Why are cultures of microbes grown at temperatures no higher than 25C in school labs.
To prevent growth of harmful pathogens.
What is an epidemic?
A break out of disease.
