Biology #1 Flashcards
What is an enantiomer?
An enantiomer is one of multiple configurations of a molecule with identical chemical composition. Eg glucose and galactose
What are the similarities and difference between cellulose, starch and glycogen?
All polymers built of glucose
Celluloses different enantiomer Bglucose alternates in (direction) when built in polymers, meaning it can fit together more closely and form hydrogen bonds and therefor is much more solid.used for structure of plants - building blocks
Glycogen is a-glucose built in a tightly packed branch network as to allow more access points for enzymes and be broken down more quickly for quick release energy in muscles.
Starch is polymers of a-glucose, built in a linear direction, but opposite to cellulose a-glucoses molecular structure doesn’t allow alternation in placement and therefor the polymers can not pack as tightly together, and therefor softer and easier to break down. Slower release source for energy storage.
