Biology 1 Flashcards
What are the differences between Electron Microscopes and Light Microscope ?
Light:
Uses light
Cheaper
Mobile
Lower resolution
Lower magnification
Electron:
can give 3D images
has to be kept in temp, pressure and humidity controlled rooms
What is the function of mitochondria ?
Mitochondria = the site of aerobic respiration
What is the function of the ribosomes ?
Ribosome = the site of protein of synthesis
What is the function of the cell wall ?
Cell wall = made of cellulose. strengthens the cell and gives it support
What is the function of the chloroplasts
Chloroplasts = contains chlorophyll - absorbs light so the plant can use it to photosynthesise
What is the function of permanent vacuole ?
Permanent vacuole = filled with cell sap. Stores water, and keeps the cell rigid, supporting the plant
What is the function of the cytoplasm
Cytoplasm = where all the reaction in the cell take place. It is a jelly like substance in which all the organelles are suspended
What is the function of the nucleus ?
Nucleus = controls all the reactions/activity in the cell. and it stores genetic information
What is a eukaryotic cell ?
Eu karyo tic cell
KARYO - nucleus
EU = after
EUkaryotic cell = after the nucleus
Eukaryotic cell = a cell where the genetic information is enclosed in a nuclear membrane
Examples - animals, plants, fungi, protists
What are Prokaryotic cells ?
PRO = before
KARYO - nucleus
Prokaryotic cell = the genetic material is NOT enclosed in a nuclear membrane
Example: bacteria
Prokaryotes are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than eukaryotes
Plasmids = rings of DNA that code for very specific features - like antibiotic resistance
What features do bacterial cells have ?
Bacterial cells can have:
1. flagella
2. slime capsule
3. cell wall
4. cytoplasm
5. Loose genetic material
6. Plasmid
7. Cell membrane
