Biological treatments for SCZ Flashcards
Antipsychotics
Medications for psychosis symptoms like delusions and hallucinations, taken as pills or injections.
Typical antipsychotics
First-generation drugs (Chlorpromazine) that block dopamine receptors to reduce positive symptoms like hallucinations.
Side effects of chlorpromazine
Dry mouth, confusion, extreme tiredness and tardive dyskinesia (body twitching).
Atypical antipsychotics
Second-generation drugs (Clozapine) that block dopamine and affect other neurotransmitters like serotonin. They treat both positive and negative symptoms with fewer severe side effects.
Clozapine side effects
Weight gain and cardiovascular issues.
Cost-effectiveness (evaluation)
Drug therapies are cheaper than hospital stays or one-to-one psychological treatments.
Combines treatment (evaluation)
Combined drug therapy and CBT improved symptoms and reduced hospital stays more than drugs or CBT alone, showing better results with combined treatments.
Atypical > Typical antipsychotics (evaluation)
Atypical antipsychotics are more effective than typical, with fewer movement side effects and fewer dropouts. Clozapine was the most effective drug.
Limit for giving only drugs (evaluation)
Drugs may only mask symptoms without addressing underlying cognitive issues.
