Biological studies Flashcards
What was the classic study for Biological?
Raine et al
What were the basics of Raine?
Raine brain scanned prisoners who claimed NGRI to see if they had a different structure of brain activity. He found that they did, they showed less activity in the frontal lobe and parietal lobe but more in the occipital lobe
3 fact of Raine?
- He himself had a brain of a psycho
- He had 82 ppts (half were controls) (NGRIs- 39 men, 2 women)
- They were kept medication-free for two weeks before
Negatives with this study? (Raine et al)
- Raine himself had a psycho brain and therefore he said the results were circumstantial
- Data taken is subjective
- It was very reductionist, saying crime is due to brain structure, their are many factors contributing.
What is the contemporary study for Biological?
Brendgen
What were the basics of Brendgen?
She wanted to find whether social aggression and physical aggression were different in 6 year and to investigate whether the link is down to genetics or social situation by comparing MZ and DZ twins
3 facts of Brendgen?
- 94 identical, 140 non-identical
- 50-60% of physical aggression is linked to genes
- 20% for social aggression
Negatives with this study? (brendgen)
- It is all a correlation not 100%
- Bregden asked them to judge their classmates, could have caused conflict
- The twins may have influenced each others behaviour and therefore had nothing to do with genetics
