Biological Psychology Flashcards
What is phrenology?
Pseudoscience involves the measurement of bumps on the skull to predict mental traits. Founded by Franz Joseph Gall, proven to be false
What is neuropsychology?
Using patients with brain damage, neuropsychologists could examine how different parts of the brain (or did not work)
What is the Electroencephalograph (EEG)?
Hans Burger developed the EEG machine to measure electrical activity generated by the brain
What are pros of the EEG?
Measures brain directly
High temporal resolution
Non-invasive
What are cons of the EEG?
Low spatial resolution- can’t pinpoint specific locations in brain
What is Computed Tomography (CT)?
3D reconstruction of many x-rays
What is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)?
Image created by measuring the release of energy from water in tissue after being exposed to a magnetic field
What does a structural MRI reveal?
Reveals brain anatomy
What does a functional MRI reveal?
Reveals brain function
What is Positron Emission Tomography (PET)?
Measures the consumption of radioactive glucose-like molecules injected into patients, a little more invasive
What processes make up neuroimaging?
CT, MRI, PET
What are the pros of neuroimaging?
High spatial resolution (MRI)
What are the cons of neuorimaging?
Low temporal resolution
Indirect measures of brain activity
