Biological Psychology Flashcards
What is the basic idea of biological psychology
The idea that the body and the mind are one
Dualism
Believed that the mind is separate from the physical mind ( descartes
Materialism
Mind and body are one
Reciprocity of biology and experience
Environment impacts you and you impact the environment ( athletes are impacted by the crowds the same way the crowds are impacted by the athletes who are actually playing the game)
What is a lobotomy
The deliberate damaging of the prefrontal cortex (1940s-1950s)
Left patients emotionally flat
What is an EEG
Measure electrical activity in the brain
Is the oldest and least precise way to measure the brain
(Tracks brain waves)
When awake the waves are shorter, when asleep waves are longer depending on how deep into sleep one is
Who uses EEG
For medical personnel this technology is useful for predicting and identifying the location of seizures
For psychologists this technology is used in sleep studies to map brain activity as we transition through various stages of sleep
What does EEG stand for
Electro-Encepha-lography
What does PET scan stand for
Positron Emission Tomography
What is a PET scan
Depicts the brains metabolic activity as a three-dimensional map- these scans track sugar glucose
It is a vivid color picture of the brain showing different way the brain has been impacted by different components , (green, blue, red, yellow)
How does a PET scan work
A patient is given temporary radioactive glucose and placed in a scanner which is highly sensitive to radiation
For what do Medical personnel use Pet Scans for
When medical personnel use it they are using it to identify tumors in the brain
When do psychologist scientist use Pet Scans
Use it to measure cognitive activity in the brain (the activity when thinking how to solve a math problem) in a pet scan the pet scan will highlight the part of the brain where a math solving happens
How do MRIs work
Measure oxygen delivery to the brain ( when an area of the brain has been active, it needs more oxygen)
When are MRI’s used
For medical use: Mostly used to pinpoint the location of possible brain damage
For research use: measure the brains’s use of oxygen while participants complete cognitive or emotional task
