Biological Molecules - Molecules of Life Flashcards
What is the theory of evolution
all organisms on earth have descended from one or a few common ancestors, and they have changed and diversified over time
What do all organisms on Earth share
All contain the same carbon-based compounds that interact in a similar way
What do these similarities suggest
Suggest that animals and plants have a common ancestor, this provides indirect evidence for evolution
Give some examples of polymers
carbohydrates, proteins and nucleic acids
What is a polymer
They are large complex molecules made up of long chains of monomers joined together
What is a monomer
They are small basic molecular units that can form a polymer
Give some examples of monomers
monosaccharides, amino acids and nucleotides
How are polymers formed
They are formed from their monomers by condensation reactions and they release a molecule of water.
What type of reaction breaks down polymers into its monomers
Hydrolysis reaction breaks the chemical bond between monomers using a molecule of water
