Biological Molecules - ATP Flashcards
What is ATP?
adenosine triphosphate is a nucleotide derivative and is formed from a molecule of ribose, a molecule of adenine and three phosphate groups.
What happens in the hydrolysis of ATP?
Converts to adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and an inorganic phosphate group (Pi)
Catalysed by the enzyme ATP hydrolase
What can the inorganic phosphate released during the hydrolysis of ATP be used for?
To phosphorylate other compounds, often making them more reactive
What happens in the synthesis of ATP?
ADP is combined with an inorganic phosphate (Pi) group by the enzyme ATP synthase
This is an energy-requiring reaction
Condensation reaction
Water is a waste product
When is ATP made?
During the reactions of respiration and photosynthesis
In what two ways can ATP be made?
Substrate-linked phosphorylation (occurs in the glycolysis stage of respiration)
Chemiosmosis (occurs in the electron transport chain stage of respiration)
