Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are biological molecules
Molecules made and used by living organisms
Examples of biological molecules
- carbohydrates
- lipids
- proteins
- DNA
- ATP
- Water
- Inorganic compounds
What are the 3 functions of carbohydrates
- Energy source (Glucose in respiration)
- Energy store (Starch in plants, glycogen in animals)
- Structure (cellulose in cell wall of plants)
What are the building blocks of carbohydrates called?
Monosaccharides
Examples of monosaccharides
- Glucose (alpha and beta)
- Galactose
- fructose
Formula for monosaccharides
C6 H12 O6
Are monosaccahrides isomers? and whats an isomer
Yes
- same formula but different arrangements
Difference between alpha and beta glucose?
On carbon 1 :
Alpha has - an OH group on the bottom
Beta has - an OH group on the top
How are monosaccahrides joined together?
Condensation reaction
Condensation reaction?
Removing water between 2 OH groups
What is the bond in a carbohydrate?
A glycosidic bond (between carbon 1 and carbon 4)
Disaccharides glucose + galactose =
lactose
Disaccharides glucose + glucose =
maltose
Disaccharides glucose + fructose =
sucrose
disaccharide formula
C12 H22 O11`
