Biological Molecules Flashcards
what does glucose + glucose make and what kind of reaction is this and what kind of bond is between the glucose molecules?
Makes maltose + water and is a condensation reaction, glycosidic bond
glucose + galactose —>
lactose
why is cellulose strong ?
Hydrogen bonds between chains of cellulose molecules»_space; microfibrils»_space; macrofibrils»_space; cellulose fibres
why is cellulose unbranched and uncoiled
the hydroxyl groups on c-1 and c-4 on beta glucose are to far apart to react so one of the beta molecules turn upside down.
why is amylose more compact and less soluble?
the bond angle means it can twist to form a helix, further stabilised by hydrogen bonds
why is amylopectin a branched structure?
made by 1-6 glycosidic bonds formed by a condensation reaction
how does glycogen differ from starch?
more branches = more compact, can be stored more easily
why is glycogen easily stored?
more branches = more compact and insoluble
