Biological Molecules Flashcards
What is a monomer?
Simple molecule used as a basic building block for the synthesis of polymers.
What is a polymer? Oh
Giant molecule made from many similar repeating subunits joined together in a chain.
What is a macromolecule?
Large biological molecule
What is a monosaccharide?
Molecule consisting of a singular sugar unit.
Alpha glucose is responsible for?
Beta glucose is responsible for?!
Alpha- combine to form starch.
Beta- combina to form cellulose
What is a polysaccharide?
Characteristics?
Have hundreds or thousands of monosaccharides joined together in one chain.
Insoluble
Not sugars
Unreactive
Most important polysaccharides?
Starch
Glycogen
Cellulose
Two storage polysaccharides ?
Starch and glycogen
Structural polysaccharides?
Cellulose.
Test for carbohydrates.
Reducing sugars
Benedict’s reagent to solution.
Heat in water bath
If sugar is present. Goes form green, yellow and orange to red brown.
Test for carbohydrates?
Non reducing sugars
Heat sugar solution in hydrochloric acid.
Neutralize it with sodium hydroxide
Add Benedict’s reagent.
If turns red - means non reducing sugar is present.
If no color change- no sugar present.
Test for starch?
Iodine solution
Turns black
Testing for lipids.
Emulsion test- utilization of ethanol.
- Substance that has lipids is shaken vigorously.
- Allows any substances to dissolve into ethanol.
- Ethanol passes to tube containing water
- If present, white suspension is formed.
