Biological Molecules Flashcards
What bonds do carbohydrates form?
Peptide bonds
What are the monomers of carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides
What are two monomers called when they join together?
Disaccharides.
Glucose + glucose =
Maltose.
Glucose + fructose =
Sucrose
Glucose + galactose =
Lactose.
What bonds do starch molecules form? What structure do they then form?
Alpha 1, 4 glycosidic bonds
Alpha 1, 6 glycosidic bonds
They form branched structures which allows hydrolysis of glucose.
What bonds does glycogen form? What structure does this then form?
A 1, 4 glycosidic bonds and 1, 6.
Highly branched structure which allows the rapid hydrolysis of glucose.
What bonds do cellulose form? What structure does this then form?
Cellulose forms Beta 1, 4 glycosidic bonds which leads to straight chains running parallel to each-other and forms hydrogen bonds between adjacent chains. These form microfibrils.
What are triglycerides made of?
One glycerol and three fatty acid molecules.
What bonds do lipids form and during what type of reaction?
Ester bonds during condensation reactions.
