Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are the 4 key chemical elements present?
Carbon
Oxygen
Hydrogen
Nitrogen
What are the 4 key elements found in?
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Lipids
What are the different forms of Carbohydrates?
Monosaccharides
Disaccharides
Polysaccharides
What are Monosaccharides?
One unit of sugar for example glucose or fructose
What are Disaccharides?
Two Monosaccharides bonded together for example maltose and sucrose
What are Polysaccharides?
Lots of Monosaccharides bonded together for example starch and glycogen
What are Proteins?
They contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. The are made up of smaller units called amino acids
What are Lipids?
They contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and they’re made up of 2 smaller units called glycerol and fatty acids.
What is the test for starch?
- Add a food sample to a test tube.
- Add a few drops of iodine.
- If starch is present then it’ll turn from orange to blue-black.
What is the test for glucose?
- Add a food sample to a test tube.
- Heat the test tube using a water bath for around 5 minutes.
- If glucose is present then it’ll turn from blue to orange/brick red
What is the test for proteins?
- Add a food sample to a test tube.
- Add a few drops of Biuret solution.
- If proteins are present then it’ll turn from blue to purple.
