Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are polymers?
Large complex molecules composed of long chains of monomers joined together
What are monomers?
Small basic molecular units that can form a polymer.
Examples of monomers
Monosaccharides/Glucose, amino acids + nucleotides
Examples of polymers
Starch, cellulose, glycogen, protein, DNA + RNA
Condensation reactions [form a polymer ]
Forms chemical bonds between monomers | releases a molecule of water
Hydrolysis [ breaks down polymers]
Adds a molecule of water| breaks the chemical bond between monomers
Monosaccharides (you need to know)
-glucose
-fructose
-Galactose
Disaccharides (you need to know)
•Sucrose
•Maltose
•Lactose
Polysaccharides (you need to know)
|starch
|cellulose
|Glycogen
Carbohydrates can be classified as:
monosaccharides, disaccharides or polysaccharides.
Glucose exists as two isomers:
Alpha glucose + Beta glucose
