biological molecules Flashcards
what is a monomer?
smallest unit of larger molecules that are polymers.
what is a polymer??
chain of monomer residues that covalent bonds link; polymerization is the process of polymer formation from monomers by condensation.
what are the four types of macromolecules??
Carbohydrates
Lipids
Proteins
Nucleic acids
What is carbohydrates monomer?
The monomer is a monosaccharide.
what is the monomer for Nucleic Acid?
The monomer is a Nucleotide.
what is the monomer for Protein?
The monomer is an Amino Acid.
what is hydrolysis?
It is made for splitting things in chemical reactions. Polymers are broken down to monomers by reverse.
what is dehydration synthesis?
when a new covalent bond is formed linking the two monomers together. AKA building things
What is saturated fat?
saturated fatty acid carbons have no double bonds. EX. are solid and have animal fats.
What is polyunsaturated?
Contains one or more double bounds. EX. most of the time like plant oil and it is liquid.
