Q

how is a hydrogen bond formed in a water molecule

A

As both oxygen and hydrogen have opposite charges they are attracted to each other. A hydrogen bond is formed between an oxygen molecule and hydrogen molecule of another water molecule due to the attraction of the charges.

Q

properties of water (LCash)

A
  • Latent heat of vapourisation coolant due to large number of hydrogen bonds in water.
  • Cohesion molecules stick together allowing water to move up xylem in plants and blood vessels in animals.
  • Adhesion water can also create hydrogen bonds to other molecules e.g (cellulose).
  • Solvent water can dissolve many ionic and polar substances
  • High Specific Heat Capacity
helps maintain a constant body temperature.

Q

what is covalent bonding ?

A

sharing of 2 or more electrons between 2 atoms. very stable and high energies are required to break the bond.
