biological molecules Flashcards
what is a water molecule made from?
water is a biological molecule that consists of hydrogen and oxygen atoms covalently bonded together
charge of water?
oxygen is negatively charged and hydrogen is positively charged making water a polar molecule
how is a hydrogen bond formed in a water molecule
As both oxygen and hydrogen have opposite charges they are attracted to each other. A hydrogen bond is formed between an oxygen molecule and hydrogen molecule of another water molecule due to the attraction of the charges.
properties of water (LCash)
- Latent heat of vapourisation coolant due to large number of hydrogen bonds in water.
- Cohesion molecules stick together allowing water to move up xylem in plants and blood vessels in animals.
- Adhesion water can also create hydrogen bonds to other molecules e.g (cellulose).
- Solvent water can dissolve many ionic and polar substances
-
High Specific Heat Capacity
helps maintain a constant body temperature.
what are monomers?
monomers are the smaller units from which larger molecules are made from.
polymers
molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together
what is covalent bonding ?
sharing of 2 or more electrons between 2 atoms. very stable and high energies are required to break the bond.
