Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are carbohydrates made of?
Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen
What is glucose stored as?
Glycogen, Starch and Cellulose (a polysaccharide)
What is maltose?
When 2 glucose molecules join together maltose is formed (a disaccharide)
What are fats composed of?
Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen
What are fats made of?
Most of them are made of triglycerides, and the basic unit is 1 glycerol molecule chemically bonded to 3 fatty acid chains
What are lipids divided in?
Fats and oils
What are proteins composed of?
Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and sometimes Sulphur
What are proteins made of?
Amino Acids ( about 20 types)
What are amino acids stored as?
Peptide, proteins
Test for glucose
Benedict’s solution, boil it, a positive result changes from blue to orangy-red
Test for starch
Iodine solution, from red to blue-black
Test for protein
Biuret Solution, from blue to purple
Test for lipids
Ethanol, from clear to cloudy white
Test for vitamin C
DCPIP solution, from blue-purple to colourless
What is DNA?
the molecule that contains the instructions for growth and development of all organisms
