Biological Macromules Flashcards
Biological Macromules
A large organic molecule such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.
Monomer
A molecule that is a building block for larger molecules (polymers).
i.e. amino acids are building blocks for proteins.
Polymer
A large molecule made of repeating subunits (monomers).
i.e. a carbohydrate is a polymer that is made from repeating monosaccharides.
Carbohydrates
Building Block: Monosaccharides
Functions: Provides cells with quick short-term energy, scourge of dietary fiber.
Examples: Glucose, sucrose, starch, cellulose, chitin.
Lipids
Building Blocks: Fatty acids and glycerol.
Functions: Provide cells with long-term energy, make up biological membranes.
Examples: Fats, phospholipids, waxes, oils, grease, steroids
Proteins
Building Blocks: Amino acids.
Functions: Provide cell structure, send chemical signals, speed up chemical reactions, etc.
Examples: Charitan (found in hair and nails), Hormones, enzymes, antibodies.
Nucleic Acids
Building Blocks: Nucleotides.
Functions: Store and pass on genetic information.
Examples: DNA, RNA.
